Todaty we see Harry offically enter Hogwarts and find a home.
The book
McGongall answers Hagrid's knock and greets the students, telling them they must pass a test to be sorted into one of 4 houses- Griffyndor, where the brave reside, Hufflepuff, where the loyal live, Ravenclaw, where the bookish types bunk, and Slytherin, where the ambitous students sleep. Harry panicks, thinking he hasn't learned enough magic. They enter the Great Hall, which Hermione whispers is enchanted to look like the night sky. McGongall places a hat on a stool, and the hat suddendly starts reciting a poem about the 4 houses. All the students try on the hat to get sorted. Ron, Hermione, and Neville all get into Griffinydor, and Draco gets into Slytherin. Then Harry tries on the hat with the plea not to go to Slytherin, so the hat places him in Griffyndor. After the sorting , Harry finds himself befoore a large feast, more food then he has seen. He asks the house perfect, Percy, who the teacher staring at him is, and he learn his name is Snape. Dumbledore introduces Quirrel and tells everyone the 3rd floor corridor is out of bounds, which Harry learns why later. The school song is sung, never to be heard again, and the chapter ends with Draco turning into Snape in Harry's dream, which they in a way do 5 years later. Too bad Harry forgets all about it.
Pottermore
This chapter's main attraction, of course, is the oppounity to get offically sorted, which I'll get to. But there's also some info on McGongall's backstory, inbcluding her halfblood status, how her parents met, etc. All of it is very cool, and helps us understand her more. Now,like the wand selection, the sorting is another 7 questinon quiz. If you get any house but Griffinydor, you get extra material. We presumably know enoough about Griffinydor already. I got Hufflepuff, and learned that their dorm is near the kitchens, since Helga Hufflepuff was very domestic, for example. We also get some brief info on the hat itself and about something called hatstall, which both Neville and Hermione have experienced. Very useful and cool info. I'll be back to discuss Harry's first class with the bravest teacher at Hogwarts.
