Chapter 5- School Supplies

Today we see what happens when Harry goes to buy school supplies.
The book
The chapter starts with Harry and his new friend Hagrid taking a boat to the mainland. Along the way, Hagrid tells Harry about how Fudge is messing up again at the Ministry of Magic ,our first clue about the politics of this world. He also says he's heard Gringotts has dragons, a fact confirmed in the final book. They go to a famous puib in the wizarding world, the Leaky Cauldron, where Harry meets many people, including Quirrel/ Voldemort. They go, via the brick wall, to Diagon Alley and first to Gringotts. There we meet Griphook, who also figures promiently in the last book. It is here,of course, that Hagrid takes the Socerer's Stone to take to Hogwarts. They go to Madam Malakin's where Harry meets Draco Malfoy,  his nemesis, who asks him which house he wants. Hagrid later tells him Hufflepuff is better tjhan Slytherin , but oddly doesn't mention Griffinydor. They finally end their shopping at Ollivander's for a most important item,a wand. Ollivander kind of creeps Harry out by noting that nhis chosen wand and Voldemort's share a common core of phoenix. The chapter ends with Hagrid sending harry back in the Muggle world with all his supplies.
Pottermore
This is the most interactive chapter of Pottermore yet. You get to buy various items with Galleons from Gringotts, where you have your own vault. This includes your wand, which you get not by waving wands around, but by taking a 7 question quiz. I got a cypress and phoenix wand ,ten inches, surprisingly swishy. There's also a heap of bonus material explaining what the various wand attributes mean. So,in my case, cypress= noblity and bravery and my core, phoenix,is the rarest core there is. I thought that was neat. Also included here is extra material about how Ollivander revolutized the art if wandmakind, and some truly funny insights on wizard garb.  I'll be back Friday with thoughts on the Hogwarts Express, and the friends- and enemies- Harry finds there.
