Chapter 4- Harry Learns Who He Is

Today we see Harry discover who he is.
The book
The knock on the door is,of course , Hagrid, a giant of a man. Yet we are supposed to be surprised 3 years later, when we learn  that he is half giant? Whatever. Hagrid does three important things here; he gives Harry his Hogwarts letter, he tells him he's a wizard, and he tells him how his parents died. Petunia admits she knew that Harry would turn out to be a wizard after her freak of a sister, foreshadowing the surprise relevation in the last book that Petunia applied to Hogwarts as well. After Vernon threatens Hagrid, the giant gives Dudley a pig tail, and the Dursleys quickly flee, lesaving Harry with Hagrid. Hagrid confesses that he isn't supposed to do  magic, and that he was expelled from Hogwarts. Harry asks why, but Hagrid dodges the questions, thus setting up a large chunk of book 2. There is also a brief reference to dormice in Hagrid's pocket, a reference,of course, to another British fantasy classic, Alice in Wonderland.
Pottermore
The only bonus material here  is what Rowling calls ghost plots- not plots about the school ghouls, but deleted scences, as it were., scences that never made it in the series  Rowling says she has many of these, so I hope to see more examples elsewhere in Pottermore. beyond that,m,more collecting of random items. I'll be back Monday to discuss the joys of Diagon Alley.
